Unfortunately my books including pictures of most of these buildings is in the attic at the XIT Ranch, so there are only a few visuals. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know why anyone cares, but I have included everything from the journal so far, so I am compelled. I was an Art History teacher and focused quite a bit on architecture from 1983-1989 so I&#8217;m trying to hold back from sharing&#8230;.we&#8217;ll see if it works&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A synopsis:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">July 1, 1980:<\/span>\u00a0 raining and cold. [I have to include this to show you that it rained pretty much every day in Paris that summer. And I was still happy as a clam.]\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>AM<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Architecture<\/strong>, Les Halles area: \u00a0S. Ran 3 miles around Tuileries and Louvre. \u00a0Met a street cleaner &amp; talked to him for a while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>AM ARCHITECTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>La Maignon:<\/strong> \u00a0(first use of colossal order in Paris). Paris, France<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">1st departure point for Paris as a planned city. \u00a0Henry IV wanted a practical, middle-cost, quality housing area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">First example of city planning in a large public space. Private and away from traffice but with commerce integrated. Influenced development of the wealthy Marais District which in turn affected all of Paris.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Contract still in effect for building in this square which dictates uniform fa\u00e7ades, red brick with details in white stone, gallery arcade on ground floor (covered to induce commerce).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Hotel Sully: \u00a0<\/strong>1634 Jean du Cerceau, son of Baptiste above \u00a0(l&#8217;h\u00f4tel is the word for city house, not a hotel).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Standard for a City Villa: \u00a0courtyard with main living behind courtyard and garden behind the house. Begin to see Baroque<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Hotel Carnavalet: \u00a0<\/strong>1548 (by master mason)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">One of the fist examples of a City Villa similar to Sully but before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Temple St. Marie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fran\u00e7ois Mansart, 1632. \u00a0(Gothic Interior)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">clear articulation of Masses (structure evident)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">restrained sculptural decoration<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>NOON-TWO<\/strong> Bought needlepoint at shop near college where we had a lecture at noon. (cost $40.00)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>PM DECORATIVE ARTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Louis XIV Lecture &amp; Germanic Glassware visit<\/p>\n<p><em>Chicken and artichoke for dinner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">July 3, 1980<\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\">: \u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">ran 3.5 miles down to l&#8217;\u00eele-de-la-cit\u00e9<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>St. Gervais<\/strong>-Solomon de Brosse (grandson of Jacques Cerceau). \u00a0First classical church in Paris where <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">correctly<\/span> used orders. Met boy when I was buying fruit from UCLA who wanted to know the word for peanut butter, obviously a backpacker. Went to hotel to needlepoint.<\/p>\n<p>Had dinner with Allison at Caf\u00e9 St. Germain across from hotel! Pizza and ice cream. \u00a0It was very good, though. It had warmed up so we sat on the street and watched all the peple walk up and down St. Germain-des-Pr\u00e8s. \u00a0Home at 10:00 to needlepoint and looked through travel books about Spain and Portugal. Bed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Charlie had come in at 5:00 am, called a boy, went back out &amp; is not home yet (9:45 AM).
