Coach Carolyn "Howie" Returning with the Spirit Stick, Summer Camp in Marshall, MO,2007

WWCD? Another great woman, What Would Carolyn Do?
Jane Lynch had to have shadowed Carolyn Howard, the virgin Queen of the female worker bees of Shawnee Mission East for decades. Carolyn was our gym teacher, and ruled over the women and the women’s country club sports, swim team, tennis team, cheerleading, heralders and pep club. She counted the homecoming votes, she counted the balls, she tallied the grades, and gave us 5 minutes to peel off that wet lancer blue spandex swimwear before the bell rang for our next class. More about her old school fashion in the JV Cheerleaders, but you get her idea, very Betty Grable. Or was that ruching actually just the indentations in our flesh to girdle in our most socially prized teenage assets?
All my sister Gina’s friends turned out to vote for me as a sophomore, so I was one of the two sophs that made JV with Kathy Kindred and that commenced the relationship with Carolyn (see Kathy: The Sophs on JV with Sr. Bad attitudes). She gave me a B that semester in gym but not knowing who I was up against, I questioned the numbers that got passed on via my sister.
“Sophomores who make JV don’t get straight As.”
She ended up changing the grade which I lived to regret.

The Sophomore Cheerleaders, 1975, Carolyn below.
Carolyn was very pretty and had a great sense of humor. And most of all, she was brutal….5:30 am summer practices before work at the Village Pool at 7…the herkies and hamstrings and but always with a heart of warm iron.

Herkies at sunset...on our Kansas beach...
She always stuck with us no matter how spastic we were, the last girl on the tennis ladder (me) still got to play even if she hadn’t mastered her loser’s mindset as she went into the match. She kept me on, when I petered out after one week of swim practice and intense chlorine, giving Marthe, a great swimmer, and me, the quitter, the coveted jobs as swim team managers who passed out the Vitamin C. My hair has not yet recovered from the humidity.

Carolyn Howard saved her old tennis balls to give to my mother, Ginny Graves, for puppets in her art classes. Here is a published picture of one of these puppets in McCall’s by Sandy Clingan, Scott’s sister, with cropped partial Paula Graves burlap drawing and mention to prove I was once a famous artist. So back to Sandy’s, it had a green cone-shaped dress and was on a stick. Here’s my dad’s drawing to give you the idea of the function of the tennis ball.

A Ginny Graves-Carolyon Howard joint creation.
I just wanted to highlight Carolyn’s contributions to the Children’s Art World of Kansas City. from Ginny Graves Discover Stuff.
Carolyn Howard had two pets, Pam Hanslip and Julie Hise. Julie was miss all pro sports and this woman worked her @s$ off as she still does in her own career that’s something like boot camp I think. Julie Stram cornered me and Kathy (the two who had traditionally been in head cheerleader slot) and Julie about our stated credentials for the coveted position of Head Cheerleader. Julie won hands down, the first to the thrones demoted to the choir. Kathy and I compared our answers, but we’ve never actually cornered Julie at a reunion to see what she said to get the job, maybe we’ll have to do that next time.

Paula in her letter jacket pre-letters at a particular SME Cheer Party with Kathy, rosy glow from that tasty '78 Marsala, compliments of Graves cooking wine cellar frigidaire.
Julie did pick up on part of the problem right away our sr. year when she jumped us for having a bad attitude at summer camp, and by the way she was more grueling than Carolyn. It didn’t stop from first bottle of cold duck, port, or whatever was available from the Graves or Kindred cellars for toddies in the SMSouth parking lot ’til we brought down the girls of ’78 in a sr-squad pre-wrestling drinking violation when she was out-of-town. For that, Howie benched us for the Shawnee Mission South Game our Sr. Year, just the Seniors, so the Juniors on JV got to cheer.

This is what mostly what Kathy and I contributed to the guys as cheermaidens, good gossip.

a Shawnee Mission East Cheerleader Jumping Jill puppet

Drawings for Carolyn in her lancer blue tracksuit with her warrior women, Jumping Jack Puppeteer Design, by Dean Graves.
And a final heirloom photo of the Carolyn Howard in Sweatsuit jumping Jack doll puppet, construction artist Paula Graves. But of course, Howie was really the puppetmaster until we toughened up and learned our own strings to guide through us through the she-life. And by the way, I earned letters in three sports at Shawnee Mission East; cheerleading, swim team manager, and debate. And I’m proud of it.
I can’t believe you remember all this stuff. It’s scary.
Lisa,
I’m swamped, can’t get to my curly hair post yet. Are you and Tim going to the Flint Hills Symphony? I have only one ticket, gave other to a Frenchman, wrangled a deal just last week, had to bring up my Master’s Thesis in Volland to get it, kind of a lot of work. Please email me if you’re going so I can find some people I know.
Loved the post. I’m doing research on the “cheerleader archetype” (which I possess) and this came up in my google search. Don’t know your people but can relate to your experiences. Live in Iowa now, but used to live in KC on the Missouri side (graduated from the now-defunct Hickman Mills High School in 1983), and then another “connection” to your post, I lived in and married a guy from Marshall, MO. I’m guessing the picture was from cheer camp at Missouri Valley College. 😉
Oh, Jo, I hope you will share with us your finds. Carolyn really did control our lives but was so unlike a cheerleader in my mind. It does make me wonder what she was like as a young girl. I always thought that she favored the athletic girls (jocks). But then got involved with cheerleading, sweetheart queen, and pep club as she felt these more “soft” women (ha! the bitches?!) who embodied traditional women stereotypes as man-cheering-princesses, needed some good ass-whuppin’ to get us all ready for Womanhood.
She really kept everyone humble. And, fostered women working together as a team. So that we would always be reminded of which team we were on. Go girls! Go women! Go Mothers, Daughters, Grandmothers, Sisters! And, of course, love men and all they bring to the table! 🙂
Hi there! I could have sworn I’ve visited this website before but
after browsing through a few of the articles I realized it’s new to me.
Anyhow, I’m definitely delighted I found it and I’ll be book-marking it and checking back often!
THank you for the compliment. Tech issues mean I haven’t been blogging, but I think they are resolved! Back to work. Thank you, Felipa.
Hi there,of course this paragraph is truly nice and I have learned lot
of things from it regarding blogging.thanks.
Thank you for the compliment. I think blogging is just kind of an outlet for me, though I do have a project where I’ll be more focused. Now, how do we monetize it!? Paula
When someone writes an paragraph he/she maintains the thought of
a user in his/her brain that how a user can know it.
Therefore that’s why this post is great. Thanks!
Good point and thought about the user. I suppose I do this a little unconsciously….
We must remember that not that far back, fast foods, paper
routes, such jobs were nearly 100% staffed by HS/College kids, they were NOT adult, family supporting jobs.
This is true. There just overall are fewer and fewer jobs it seems, so it’s hurting at all levels. And it’s frightening that we aren’t producing more engineers, coders, etc. for those are the jobs that are paying enough to support families. Even when we do, our country outsourced so much technically that we don’t have specialized niches, so young persons in those areas have to become employed somewhere before they can really focus on a given language as no one can know it all. Interesting times…
Currently it looks like BlogEngine is the best blogging platform out there right now.
(from whuat I’ve read) Is that what you’re using on your
blog?
I think it was just a wordpress.com blog that was built by the original website designers, Insight Design in Wichita.
My coder is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP.
I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses.
But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on various websites for
about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform.
I have heard excellent things about blogengine.net.
Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress content into
it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am so ignorant on this stuff. The more I read, the more I’m confused. I had website designers in Wichita do the site in 2010, but it was hosted on GoDaddy. Then it was converted to responsive by others where it was affordable and does comply with Google Amp for “speed of loading” requirements. I’m trying to do a new site, and it’s an entirely different world. I’d build myself, but I am pretty confident I would go nuts, plus just took on another job.
Keep me posted and I will you also. My other email is pega8213@gmail.com

Thank you very much. I am a sucker and have been dup’d in a big way once, other times just kind of a “live and learn”. But, it’s certainly the CyberWest out here, isn’t it?
Everything is very open with a really clear clarification of the issues.
It was truly informative. Your website is very helpful. Thank you for sharing!
Total Manhattan Office Class A vacancies decreased from 22.75 million RSF to 22.11 million RSF.
This is fascinating.I think you are saying that there is more demand and fewer rentable square feet which surprises me as I would think more would be working remotely. But, I also don’t know the status of the infrastructure in domestic buildings and dwellings in the urban area. One would think it would largely be up to speed with fiber and was many years ago, but in looking at patterns and demographics, it is “all about the money” and this stuff isn’t cheap. Interesting, thank you.
If you would like to get a good deal from this piece of writing then you have to
apply such strategies to your won webpage.
This is true. I’m gearing up, thank you for the pep talk and reminder…..

Interesting information that I found very helpful. Thank you!
Hi friends, fastidious article and pleasant urging commented here, I am truly
enjoying by these.
thank you!
Amazing! Its actually amazing article, I have got much clear idea regarding from this piece of writing.
My brother recommended I might like this web site.
He was entirely right. This post actually made my day.
You cann’t imagine just how much time I had spent for this information!
Thanks!
Thank you! How old is your brother?
Thank you for the compliment. I am actually going to look into your equipment, too. My exercise is in a rut…it happens, it’s just boring.
I’m gone to tell my little brother, that he should also pay
a visit this weblog on regular basis to obtain updated from most up-to-date news.
Thanks for another fantastic article. Where else may anyone get that
kind of info in such a perfect manner of writing?
I have a presentation subsequent week, and I’m at the look for
such information.
Totally available! I am serious, I’m self-employed, un-employed, but somehow the writing and remote sites never seem to line up with how I’ve put skills online, I guess. I think I missed your deadline for your presentations, so I apologize. But, if you ever have any need for a particularly type of writing and topic where you think my skillset and style/tone/adaptability to topic are relevant, please send an email to me at pega8213@gmail.com. Link exchange is nothing else however it is only placing the other person’s web site link
on your page at proper place and other person will also do similar in support of you.
Hello, I think your site might be having internet browser compatibility problems.
Whenever I take a look at your website in Safari, it looks fine however, if opening in I.E.,
it’s got some overlapping issues. I merely wanted to provide you with a quick heads
up! Besides that, excellent website!
Thank you for the help! it has technically been a nightmare for a year, and I’d re-work but I’m working on another project and site and can somewhat link the two. I do appreciate your specific notes about issues. Thank you.
That is very interesting, You’re an overly professionnal blogger.
I have joined your rss feed and stay up for seeking more of
your wonderful post. Additionally, I have shared yor site in my social networks
Thank you for the kind words. I think I finally have blog working again after almost a year of challenges. Have a nice weekend. Paula
Thank you! I’ll get back to work. It’s been technically challenging but I see the light…
I’ve been surfing online more than 2 hours
today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.
It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you
did, the net will be much more useful than ever before.

Yes, I think I just get piles of spam. This site didnt work very well and still has issues tho I did the best to convert to responsive and somewhat complied with Google Amp (speed tests for loading) that were more relevant perhaps last year, so I don’t want to tell you how much backlog I have in comments unaddressed and finally just somewhat let it be as it “was” historically and have focused on a new website for an ongoing project (it’s a writer’s website for children’s book Prairie Pug, written and illustrated in 1991, self-published, now putting into ePub for a series). While that’s complicated, I did find the right designer fit for that site (in England but specific to writer’s…maybe they do other…it’s BookSwarm) for this website and I’m sure designing to present is going to be cleaner and hopefully with less “junk” getting in. I’m going to have to look up Taruhan Bola Online…in fact, right now….Yes, TONS of spam. But, also sometimes in whatlooks like spam is someone I believe is sincere and I do see a “link” mentally in their vocation, so I then highlight the foreign characters/language, put into Google converter type thing when I can find the one I’ve been using, and sometimes it’s just a language barrier. Usually the inappropriate XXX SPAm is pretty evident….:)
hey there and thank you for your information – I have certainly picked up something new from right here.
I did however expertise a few technical issues using this site, since I
experienced to reload the site lots of times previous to I could get it to load properly.
I had been wondering if your hosting is OK? Not that I’m complaining,
but sluggish loading instances times will often affect
your placement in google and can damage your high-quality score if advertising and marketing with Adwords.
Well I am adding this RSS to my email and could look out for much more
of your respective interesting content. Make sure you update this
again soon.
I appreciate this and I am making note. It’s an old 2009 site, then converted to responsive, but I believe due to videos/pictures/security/emerging infrastructure we are all experiencing that it hasn’t been easy for any of my tech help (to maintain the original IP within the site, make friendly to everything). As far as the sluggishness I’m not sure, as a year ago it ace’d the Google Amp tests, but again I realize this is place and device specific? I do think the ‘layers’ of what everything goes through in US are complicated now with security and even with my own stuff, I’m never sure if I’m entering some “back door” or what, so I appreciate your comment and will more frequently test site at various public places on more public computers to see if there is any pattern as to where/why of speed of site loading. I also did feel like it’s not quite as fast as it was even a year ago, but I also work from a home office in area where something locally could be an issue. Can you tell I’m sort of “on my own” for figuring this stuff out? It’s not that I haven’t asked many and paid a few “best experts”, so I’ve somewhat stepped a bit away from this site as main project until things seem more stable, but I do appreciate your kind words and note of issues you are having. Paula
Greetings! Quick question that’s totally off topic.
Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My weblog looks weird when browsing from
my iphone4. I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able
to fix this issue. If you have any recommendations, please share.
Thank you!
Dear Hoc thoi sao truc,
I have to apologize for some challenging aspects of this site. It was made responsive, but I think due to the number of videos that it is (and never was before this) not possible for me to do “updates” (within the blog) without having a time intensive re-working of the videos within the blog. It is clunky, I have pursued re-designing, but because of the dynamic nature of internet in some areas (and I do seem to pick them!), I’ve chosen to wait and instead focus on a new site for a book character, Prairie Pug. I have an iphone 4,and I did have to use temporarily within the last year, but (isn’t this unprofessional!), I don’t think I played with it much on that iphone. I do believe that the site is doing a reasonably good job with the blog from which material does go back to 2009-10, so I’m sorry for your troubles with it. I will make note of this so that when I do budget and pursue a re-design of this “first” website that this will be addressed. My iphone 4 was still great, small for viewing my site and many things (I’m 57), but it was a good one.
I also appreciate the ‘theme or plugin’ as I am just getting into this level of self-management of what was a site that really needed little managing at all until the last few years. I’ve had a few experiences trying to find assistance with this with a “real, local, person” as well as online and while it’s not in this exact area, I am being a little “slow” to jump in and have hope in next person offering services due to often being left having written a check, but with issues that they either couldn’t or never intended to resolve as I do think there are numerous factors as to why it’s so hard lately (at least for me). I want to assume that it’s not that I’m getting scammed, but that there are larger network security issues that are both beyond my control but that I must really “need to know” only on a “need to know” basis. Instead, I’m using this time to better educate myself about wordpress and numerous related issues.
I’m sorry this isn’t helpful to you with the viewing of my website/blog on iphone 4s, but your comment has “registered” with me and will be documented for when I get my head back into “tech”. It’s (my focus) in the ibook Prairie Pug now, and hopefully that will be available in Apple Store within a few weeks or sooner. And, the prairiepug.com site may soon even have some kind of URL up, though it’s a wireframe so I”m not sure what you will experience. I think it will be simpler as its initial design was for responsive (iOS) unlike http://www.backattheranchwithpaula.com. Or, I can at least say when it’s sold as ebook (or whoever distributes the book) that it works on “XXX” devices so I don’t waste your time with quirky/glitchy technology. Thank you for the heads up!
Hi mates, how іs all, and what you would like to say
concerning this post, in my view itѕ truly amazing
for me.
Magnificent website. Plenty of useful information here.
I’m sending it to some buddies ans also sharing in delicious.
And obviously, thank you in your effort!

but what can I say… I put things off a lot and don’t manage
to get nearly anything done.

Great blog here! Also your website loads up fast! What web host are you using?
Can I get your affiliate link to your host?
I wish my web site loaded up as quickly as yours lol
I, unfortunately, know little about the “back end” if that’s what a web host is…???!!! It is my goal to learn more this year….or maybe in 20. :). Thank you for the compliment! It’s probably on here somewhere for a tech-savvy person to see…Maybe GoDaddy is my web host?
What’s up colleagues, its impressive post concerning cultureand entirely explained, keep it up all
the time.
Whats up this is somewhat of off topic but I
was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding expertise so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience.
Any help would be enormously appreciated!
I feel that is one of the most important info for me.
And i am glad reading your article. However want to commentary on some normal things, The
site style is great, the articles is truly great : D. Good process, cheers
Excellent article! We will be linking to this great post on our site.
Keep up the great writing.
If some one desires expert view on the topic of running a blog afterward i propose him/her to pay a
visit this web site, Keep up the nice job.
Right here is the right webpage for everyone who wishes to understand this topic.
You understand a whole lot its almost hard to argue with
you (not that I personally would want to…HaHa).
You definitely put a new spin on a topic which has been discussed for many years.
Wonderful stuff, just wonderful!
Sweet site, super design and style, rattling clean and
utilise friendly.
Can I simply just say what a comfort to find somebody who truly understands
what they’re discussing online. You definitely realize how to bring a
problem to light and make it important. More and more people must read this
and understand this side of your story. I can’t believe you’re not more popular because you certainly have
the gift.
Thank you so much Martie! I really appreciate. She did make us tough! Hope you have similar (in some ways) high school stores of women mentors!
I don’t even know how I ended up here, however I thought this post was once great.
I do not know who you are but definitely you’re going to a famous blogger for those who aren’t already.
Cheers!
Thank you for the compliments. I will follow your comments with thoughtful writing.
You could definitely see your expertise within the work you write.
The arena hopes for more passionate writers such as you who aren’t afraid to say how
they believe. At all times follow your heart.
Thank you for the kind comments re writing.
